Sensitive or Reactive skin can be caused by a whole range of dysfunctions both, within the skin and within the body, but the common thread is the inflammation that is created Having what is commonly known as sensitive skin is not normal nor a condition that has to be lived with. Sensitive skin is actually a symptom of skin that is in a reactive state with impaired barrier function and though it can take time it is possible to revise with our treatment plans.
REACTIVE SKIN (IMPAIRED BARRIER)
WHAT IS IT?
PIGMENTATION TRIGGERS & TIPS
The Skin barrier is the skin’s own natural protective layer. This protective layer does 2 things – it protects your skin from any bacteria or toxins wanting to enter and locks in moisture to your skin to prevent water loss. This layer is made up of corneocytes (cells) and keratin (protein) which are held together by the skin’s natural oils.
When this skin barrier is impaired it makes way for nasties to enter the skin and disrupt it from functioning optimally. This may be why some skins react to certain products. The skin may look or feel itchy, dry, rough, inflammed and may come up with a fungal skin condition.
WHAT CAUSES AN IMPAIRED BARRIER?
& TIPS TO STRENGTHEN YOUR SKIN BARRIER
There are a number of things that can damage your skin’s barrier. These may include:
-
Too much or unprotected sun exposure. Always apply sun screen in the morning and re-apply throughout the day even if it is raining outside.
-
Avoid using harsh products or ingredients. Over-exfoliating and using too many AHAs and BHAs in your skincare regime and strip away your skin’s natural protective layer.
-
Stress increases cortisol levels (stress hormone) which then drives inflammation in the skin.
-
Increase Essential Fatty Acids in your diet, this will calm down inflammation. e.g Avocado, salmon, walnuts, flaxseed oil and canola oil.
-
Avoid taking hot showers. This could dry the skin further and break down the barrier of the skin.
-
Certain medications such as steroids may also weaken the immunity of the skin barrier.
